I love Nate Berkus for the work he does and how well he carries himself in life. I’ve met him a few times and he has exceeded my expectations of how great of a guy he truly is every time. As I was watching a Nate Berkus interview, I came across this and had to share this video still with everyone. I caught myself laughing out loud when I came to the realization that I knew the paparazzi guy, Patrick (red hat) who was getting an autograph from Nate.
One morning my friend and I went to see Tom Hanks at Good Morning America. Patrick happened to be standing with us. I got the chance to talk with him a little; he’s such a goofball and a great time. I remember he gave another one of his buddies he was standing with a hard time, saying he looked like some dorky movie star. I joined in the conversation by asking all the guys if Patrick looks like Henry Winkler as I flashed a photo of ‘The Fonz’. They all agreed and had a good laugh, making the morning that much more enjoyable and worth while.
After spending that morning with Patrick at GMA, I’ll always remember him for the time we sang “You’ve Got a Friend In Me” in the rain while holding the umbrella over our heads as we waited for Tom Hanks. Thank you, Patrick, for showing me the technique on the perfect pen handoff and nominating me to hand his ‘nicest sharpie’ to Tom Hanks.
There are always two sides of the story. People always focus on the celebrity but never write about the man holding the paper and handing the pen. Not to take away from Nate Berkus, or anyone else who has worked so hard to gain the recognition and respect they deserve, but I know that Nate would enjoy hearing this. I hope you read this, Nate, and it might make you feel good to know that this man is such a sweet guy, just like yourself.
Thank you, Nate, for reading this blog post shortly after I posted it and for tweeting me on several other occasions.
